How much can a parent give or leave a child tax free?
Up to €420,000 in total for gifts and inheritances taken on or after 7 October 2026. That is the Group A threshold.
The €420,000, €44,000 and €22,000 thresholds are in section 66 of Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026, for benefits taken on or after 7 October 2026. Revenue already publishes them. The Bill had not been signed into law when we last checked on 2 November 2026, so the figures could still change.
It is a single total for you, not an amount per parent and not an amount per year. Group A gifts and inheritances you have received since 5 December 1991 count against it.
Anything above the threshold is taxed at 33%. A child left €450,000 on 7 October 2026 with nothing earlier in the group would pay €9,900 on the €30,000 above it.
What can reduce this
- The first €3,000 of gifts from each person each calendar year is exempt and does not count. See the small gift exemption.
- The dwelling house exemption may apply if you lived in the home and meet the conditions.
- Agricultural Relief and Business Relief may reduce the taxable value of farm or business property.
The calculator leaves out everything on that list except the small gift exemption, so check these with Revenue or an adviser if they might apply to you.
